The film starts with Elizabeth who, around the time had turned thirty.

She had everything an educated, wealthy, ambitious American woman was supposed to want—a husband, a house in the suburbs of NY, a successful career. But instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed with panic and confusion. She was unhappy in her marriage and often spent the night sleeping on her bathroom floor. After separating from her husband and initiating a divorce, which he contested, she embarked on a rebound relationship, which continued for some time but did not work out, leaving her devastated and alone.

To recover from all this, Elizabeth took a radical step. In order to give herself the time and space to find out who she really was and what she really wanted, she got rid of her belongings, quit her job, and undertook a yearlong journey around the world all-alone.

On a trip to Indonesia well before her year of travel, she had gone to Bali, to write an article and there, met a ninth-generation medicine man, who told her she would one day come back and study with him.

Her aim was to visit three places where she could examine one aspect of her own nature.

In Rome, Italy, Elizabeth fell in love with the citizens’ life, so different from hers. Rediscovers the pleasure of food and realizes that life is full of transformations, when meeting people whose spirit, gave her strength.

Suddenly, she sees herself surrounded by a crowd in India, her second destination.

India was for the art of devotion, and with the help of a native guru, she embarked on four uninterrupted months of spiritual exploration. There, she was able to study the art of balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.

She also meets someone that teaches her, how to believe in love again.

By the time she reaches Indonesia, Elizabeth herself admits that the stated purpose of the visit has already been accomplished. "The task in Indonesia was to search for balance," she writes, "but . . . the balance has somehow naturally come into place."

Therefore would seem to be only one thing missing — romance.

At first, it seemed difficult for her to fall in love again, but after a conversation with the medicine man, he taught her that, sometimes “loosing the balance” for love, is part of a balanced life.

And those words define her fait.
