3) The text below is about Claudia, a CLAC student. She is learning to talk about her memories and her past,so decided to create a small biography to share with her class.
My name is Claudia, I am twenty-two years old and study English at the best course in the world! But my life now is very different from when I was a child. At the age of 10, I used to go to school every day, and there I studied a lot about difficult subjects. However, I was a smart girl, so every time I didn’t know something, I asked my teacher and studied at home. I used to like school very much, since it was fun and interesting. Nowadays, I miss my school, because I work all the week long and don’t have time to ask questions anymore.
I was smart, and I was also a funny girl. I was too tall and thin, and all the other children were smaller than me, so I was always the leader of every game. My best friend was Susane, and together we were the best pair of the school. From my school days, I remember that we used to study after classes until night, and me and Susane were very happy when our grades were similar (they were always 10, of course!). Nowadays, I don’t talk to Susane anymore, because we almost don’t see each other, but I like her the same way I used to like her in the past. We were best friends!
- When did most of the things in her text happen? Justify your answer with some examples.
- Is everything in the text in the past? Can you see information in the present?
- According to question E, why do you think Claudia uses two different times (verb tenses) to talk about her school life?
4) Mark True (T) or False (F) according to the text. Correct the false sentences!
( ) Claudia talks about her school life in the present ___________________________________________
( ) She was not a smart person ____________________________________________________________
( ) The grades of Claudia and Susana were good _____________________________________________
( ) Susana was the tallest person at the school ________________________________________________
( ) Claudia didn’t like her school __________________________________________________________
5) Claudia talks about some characteristics, both hers and about her school, friend and life. To do that, she uses “used to”,an expression that you already know, and two other words that she repeats a lot. Can you identify these words? Underline them and write them in the lines below.
______________________________ _________________________________
- What do they mean?
- Do you remember any words/expressions that are similar to them?
- What is the difference between these two words? Can you use both of them in the same places?
6) Now it is your turn! Write a small paragraph about your school life, using the new words you learned to talk about things from the past. Talk about your habits, your characteristics, and one person that was important to you. [pic 3]
The simple past is a verb tense that is used to talk about things that happened or existed before now: |
E.g¹: He won the silver medal.
E.g²: Wolfgang entered a hula hoop contest.
How to Formulate the Simple Past
For regular verbs, add –ed, -ied or just –d.
Play→Played Type→Typed Listen→Listened Push→Pushed
Love→Loved Cry → Cried Apply → Applied Fry → Fried
For irregular verbs, things get more complicated. The simple past tense of some irregular verbs looks exactly like the root form:
Put→Put Cut→Cut Set→Set Cost→Cost Hit→Hit
