Aggregate is a particulate material, cohesive, with practically null chemical activity, constituted of particles covering wide range of sizes. They´re classified in coarse aggregates (Gravels with equal minimum diameter to the 4.9 mm) fine aggregate (Sands with a maximum diameter equal to 4.8 mm). The aggregates are fundamental constituents in the development of new formulations of materials used in construction, exerting beneficial influences in the properties of the final product, such as withstands mechanical stresses, weathering, wear, well as to minimize shrinkage and to increase the abrasion resistance. The present work has like objective to develop a theoretical basement about the influence of particle size distribution on the property of concrete such as workability, shrinkage, durability, compression and traction resistance, compactness, adherence, permeability, among others. One of the characteristics of great importance is the surface area of the grains that influences the water/ cement mixture, that is, a higher surface area results in most water in the mixture, resulting in greater shrinkage of the mass. The grain shape is another important characteristic that affects the workability and the compactness of the concrete, preventing defects such as nests of mouse. Concrete composed of aggregates with a wide range of particle size distribution, results in a final product with lower void ratio, low water absorption, high compactness, lower permeability. Therefore, one needs more and more aware of the properties of aggregates, including particle size analysis, moisture, porosity, surface wear, among others mentioned above, so that it increases the life of the product, is increasingly hit the dosage and get increasingly optimize the production process, exponentially increasing the quality and properties of the object under study.
