AVALIAÇÃO DIRIGIDA III – READING WORKSHEET

Feeding the American Dream

One of the most recognizable brands in the world is McDonald’s. Today, this fast food restaurant chain serves nearly 70 million customers every day in over 36,000 locations in more than 100 countries worldwide. But how did it all start?

The 2016 movie, The Founder, tells the story of Ray Kroc, the multi-billionaire businessman who often referred to himself as the founder of McDonald’s. But Kroc didn’t start the business at all! The McDonald brothers, Maurice and Richard, opened a drive-in restaurant in 1940 selling a range of dishes, from sandwiches to grilled meat platters. There were no seats inside, only a few benches by the front, and customers sat in their cars while being served.

Soon, the brothers realized that 80% of all the menu items sold were hamburgers. People were not interested in variety. In 1948, Maurice and Richard made an important decision. They got rid of their servers, and replaced their glasses and plates with paper cups and wrappings. There was no table service. Customers collected their food from the counter. There were only nine choices on the menu: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, three types of sodas, milkshakes, coffee, fries, and pie. They also changed how the kitchen staff worked, so that each person had only one task. One person took the orders. Another grilled the burgers. Someone else added the ketchup, and so on. This helped McDonald’s to prepare every dish quickly – customers no longer waited for their meals! The speed of their service became famous.

In 1954, Maurice and Richard ordered eight milkshake mixers so they could prepare 48 drinks at the same time. The salesman who delivered them was Ray Kroc. He fell in love with the idea of the fast food restaurant. He bought the management rights from the brothers and opened similar restaurants all across the U.S. – more than 200 between 1954 and 1960. A year later, he bought the whole company, even the name, so Kroc was now the owner. He turned it into a worldwide brand, but despite the title of the movie being about him, he didn’t actually found McDonald’s.
