The Secret to Happiness
Happiness is a concept sought by individuals of all societies. Some equate it solely to material wealth and fame. However, happiness cannot be reduced simply to these two ideas; because many times material possessions and fame fade away and lose their importance. True happiness means constantly achieving goals, and, above all, having the support of friends and family members.
On a daily basis, television shows, magazines, and the Internet present the image that individuals can only be happy when they possess money and material wealth. In other words, unless a person has a great amount of money, the latest model of a vehicle, or a luxurious watch, he or she will not be happy. In reality, possessing wealth can actually be a source of stress and consequently may lead to unhappiness. For example, lottery winners are seen as lucky and happy people, yet, after the initial excitement of winning a large sum of money has past, they may face some challenges. Many become the target of criminals, such as kidnappers and swindlers. Moreover, they often have to deal with the hassle of people asking them for money constantly. Likewise, some lottery winners spend their entire earnings buying properties, cars, and jewelries, but forget to set funds aside for taxes. This can lead to problems with the Internal Revenue Service, which for some people may result in having to spend time in prison. Besides money, many people also link fame link to happiness. Celebrities are often perceived as intelligent and joyful individuals; their lives appear to be perfect. In reality, famous people are not necessarily happy. For instance, despite all her fame and success, the British singer Amy Winehouse turned to drug and alcohol abuse because of her unhappiness. Having a large fan base and being in the spotlight were apparently not enough to make her happy, the result: a premature death caused by an alcohol overdose.
But if money and fame alone cannot make an individual happy, what can? Happiness involves constantly achieving simple and complex goals in life. Some examples of goal achievements include: running faster, getting a job, being accepted by a prestigious university and becoming a parent. Obtaining material wealth and fame are achieved goals for many, but as noted, they alone do not produce lasting happiness. The pop singer Madonna, for example, achieved wealth and fame; however, her life is not just about performing and being in the spotlight. Madonna develops projects to help needy children in Africa. In other words, she has other goals that provide purpose to her life and bring her happiness.
Additionally, happiness means to have friends and family to share life with, not only in the good moments, but also in the bad ones. No one can be happy alone. Even though moments of solitude can be necessary to think and even relax; family and friends are essential: they listen, give their opinions, and care. For example, thousands of soldiers were deployed during the war in Iraq, the combat zone was harsh, and service members needed to endure a great deal of stress. Nonetheless, many were able to find happiness and endure the situation with the partnership of their fellow combat friends as well as with the love and support of their family members back home. In short, even during difficult times the support of friends and family members can bring happiness.
