FILM CRITIQUE PAPER

Toy Story is an 81-minute animation that tells the story of a boy's toys, Andy, and the relationship between them. The protagonist of the film is Woody, the boy's favorite toy.

The central conflict of the film is justified by the fear that Andy's toys have to be replaced and that fear can be observed throughout the film's plot. This conflict is already demonstrated in the first 10 minutes of Andy's birthday celebrating his birthday and his toys feel threatened by the possible replacement that can happen through the gifts that Andy will win. Woody tries to calm down all the toys saying that they will not be replaced, and that they can live peacefully with all the other toys that will come, and behold Andy wins an astronaut, Buzz Light Year, Woody feels threatened, becomes jealous and starts to share the same fear that the other toys felt, but more intensely, because the boy starts to pay more attention to Buzz than to Woody. And it is at that moment, motivated by jealousy, that he puts Buzz in a trap and the two end up falling into the hands of the neighbor, thus, they spend some days in the house of this boy so feared by all the toys. During those days, through a television commercial, Buzz discovers that he is not an astronaut but rather a toy and that, consequently, could not fly. This is cause for disappointment, because he believed that he was a real astronaut and that he was on earth with a mission from another planet.
It is clear that this neighbor is the villain of history. An important fact is that at no time of the film is a name given to this neighbor. What is shown is that his room is full of scary toys, puppets with no head, no eyes, his room was like a laboratory that was the scene of destruction and experiences that he made with his toys.
As Andy's family moves to the end of the film, Andy's family decides to move, but his favorite Woody and Buzz are lost in the neighbor's house, and the outcome of the story comes when they manage to save themselves from the boy's hand and arrive, Then, Andy's arms: Andy's arms.

The movie is filled with transitional objects, according to the author, may be a teddy bear, a doll, or a soft toy, and it usually appears at bedtime and comes as a defense against depression. And this object needs to be used and spent for everyday use. In this movie, it is clear that whenever Andy goes to sleep or leave, he makes use of Woody, a cowboy with collapsible arms, legs, heads and hands.

We can see in Toy Story that, the characteristic that the object has a reality of its own can be observed throughout the film, since the plot is built on top of this reality that is part of the toys. As such, they come to life and relate to each other. Andy's bedroom is filled with toys that do their job according to what they are. For example: the soldiers are always ready to defend the entire group, the cowboy Woody is seen as the leader, the astronaut gets his attention due to the technology that comes from him. Anyway, the story is built more according to the reality of the toys of the hat in the reality of Andy.

We can notice that, through the film, that the story of Toy Story is a transgenic phenomenon itself, since throughout the film history is built into the reality of toys. The feature film can be considered a metaphorical relationship between the child and the play. Metaphor, for it illustrates in a playful way what happens in the intermediate area of experience. The film beautifully portrays the relationship of a child with his toys. Finally, I would like to emphasize that the final scene of the film passes inside the car of Andy's mother, where the boy and his family are moving in with their new home, and at this moment the only toys that go in the back seat with the boy are: Woody and Buzz. The other toys are transported to the changing truck. Thus, it is clear that, especially Woody, he was there with the security and protection, thus fulfilling his function of transitional object in a last moment in which the boy shows his relation with his favorite toy.
