New York or New York (in English : New York ) is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York Metropolitan Area , one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world . It is also the third most populous city in America , behind São Paulo and Mexico City . The city has a significant impact on trade , finance, media , art, fashion , research, technology , education and entertainment for the whole planet . New York is home to the headquarters of the United Nations ( UN) , 8 being an important center for international affairs and widely regarded as the cultural capital of the world .
New York is a global hub of international business and commerce and is one of three " command centers " of the global economy ( along with London and Tokyo ) . The city is a major center for banking and retail, finance , world trade, transportation , tourism , real estate , insurance , new media as well as traditional media , theater , fashion and the arts in the United States .
Tourism is one of the most important industries of New York , with more than 40 million domestic and international tourists visiting the city every year for the past five years. The main sights include the Empire State Building , Statue of Liberty , Ellis Island , Broadway productions , museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art , green spaces such as Central Park and Washington Square Park , Rockefeller Center, Times Square and the luxury shops along Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue.
