Journal 9: Chapter 10                                                                                               Carolina Santos

In chapter 10 I learned about motivation and emotion. This chapter was interesting in diverse ways, as I had never thought about the importance of understanding intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

I went through a moment where my motivation completely shifted. When I worked, for the first two years I had a boss who was genuinely nice, kind, empathetic and I could always count on him whenever I needed, so I felt totally motivated to go to work, I got up earlier than my alarm clock, I did not miss work even though I was sick, and I almost never got sick, my anxiety had improved a lot and I felt emotionally good all the time. Then my boss was transferred to another unit and I had to start dealing with a different boss, who did not even have the slightest experience in leadership, he did not know how to deal with problems and he also did not help me with any situation I needed, and I felt like nothing I did was enough for him and that no matter how hard I worked he would never recognize my worth, I always expected from him a kind of reinforcement, such as praise, to try to increase my intrinsic motivation. Overall, my anxiety increased, I had zero motivation to work, I cried many times before going to work or even arriving late sometimes because I did not have the strength to get out of my bed. I did not eat often and that lasted through my last 3 years at the company, and I wonder if I have held on for so many years just out of my need for achievement.
