Vocabulary “Table Manners”
Table Manners (n) – the way you eat your food, or the socially acceptable way to eat your food, especially when eating your meal with others. (Ex: Don’t they teach you table manners at school?)
Manners – Maneiras - polite ways of treating other people and behaving in public.
(Ex: It’s bad manners to eat with your mouth open. / It’s considered good manners in some societies to leave a little food on your plate.)
Polite (adj) – Educado (Ex: Please be polite to the guests. / It isn’t polite to interrupt people when they’re talking. / He said he liked the show, but he was only being polite.) (guest (n) = hóspede, convidado)
Behave (v) – Comportar-se (Ex: Your children are so polite, they behave very well with other people. / Let’s stay calm and try to behave like responsible adults.)
Behaviour (n) – Comportamento (Ex: I’m not going to accept your violent behavior. /
I was shocked by his bad behavior.)
Fork (n) – Garfo - a small object with three or four points and a handle that you use to pick up food and eat.
Handle (n) – Cabo de talher, Maçaneta, alça de mala, alça de xícara,etc…
(Ex: I can’t pick the kettle up – the handle’s too hot./ She turned the handle and slowly opened the door.) (Kettle (n) = bule )
Spoon (n) – Colher - an object used for eating soups and liquids.
Proud (adj) – Orgulhoso – Feeling Pleasure or satisfaction because you or people connected with you have done something good. (Ex: She’s very proud of her daughter./ She’s the proud owner of a new car.)
Pride (n) = orgulho (Ex: These young people are the pride of their community.)
Rule (n) – Regra - an accepted principle or instruction that states the way things are or should be done, and tells you what you are allowed or are not allowed to do.
(Ex: You must follow the rules. / You need to respect the rules.)
Rule (v) – Governar (ditar as regras) - to control – (Ex: Who will be the next leader to rule the country? / America wants to rule the world.)
Soup (n) – Sopa
Soap (n) – Sabão, Sabonete
Lift (v) – Levantar - to move something from a lower to a higher position (Ex: Could you lift this table for me , please? / Lift the lid and look inside the box.
(lid (n) = tampa) / We watched the balloon lift slowly into the air. / Lift up your feet so I can sweep the floor.) (sweep (v) = varrer)
Deep – Profundo – The ocean is very deep.
Dip (v) – Mergulhar algo em um líquido - To put something into a liquid for a short time. (Ex: Dad likes to dip his toast into his soup. / She dipped her toe into the pool to see how cold it was.) (toe (n) = dedo do pé )
Dribble (v) – Babar - to have liquid slowly coming out of your mouth. (Ex: Babies dribble constantly / The baby was dribbling.)
Enemy (n) – inimigo / Tines – Pontas do Garfo /
Through (prep) – Através – (Ex: We drove through the tunnel. / She was watching him through the kitchen window. /He walked slowly through the woods.)(woods = bosque)
Reluctant (adj) – Relutante ( Ex: I was having such a good time that I was reluctant to leave.)
Along (prep) – junto, junto a, ao longo de – in a line next to something long (Ex: They had a romantic walk along the river. / Cars were parked all along the road.)
Realize (v) – Perceber (de entender) - To understand a situation – (Ex: Today I realize how much it is important to have a family. / They didn’t realize the danger they were in. / You just have to realize that you can’t always get what you want.)
Even (adv) – Mesmo, Até Mesmo (Ex: I like going to the beach even when it’s winter. / This is so easy that even a child can do it.)
Not even – Nem mesmo (Ex: He didn’t even buy me a card for my birthday. / She can’t go to your wedding, she doesn’t even have a dress. / The thief took away all my money, he didn’t even let me keep my coins. / Sorry that I didn’t call you when you were at the hospital, but I didn’t even know that you were sick. / I never cry; not even when I hurt myself really badly.)

Seem (v) – Parecer (Ex: You seem to be a nice person. / He seems to be angry.)
Able (adj) – capaz (Be able to – ser capaz de) (Ex: He isn’t able to drive a truck.)
Accomplish (v) – Realizar - to finish something successfully. (Ex: It’s amazing what you can accomplish through hard work. / There are several different ways to accomplish the same task.) (task (n) = tarefa)
Accomplishment (n) – realização, conquista (We celebrated the accomplishment of all our goals. / We celebrated the successful accomplishment of our task.) (goal (n) = meta)
Achieve (v) – atingir (de conquistar) (Ex: She was so desperate for success that she would do anything to achieve it. / This year our company was able to achieve all of its production goals.)
Achievement (n) = conquista (Ex: She spoke with pride about her son’s achievements. / Getting a gold medal at the Olympic Games is a big achievement. )
Peaceful (adj) – Tranquilo, pacifico / peace (n) = paz / piece (n) = pedaço
Meat (n) – Carne (Ex: I’m a vegetarian and I never eat meat; not even when I’m really hungry and there’s nothing else to eat.)
Knife (n) – Faca - An object used for cutting things or food.
Pick (sth/sb) Up (PV) – Pegar algo ou alguém (Ex: Could you pick that pencil up for me, please? / Every day I pick up my kids at school in the afternoon.)
Reign (v) – Reinar (Ex: How long did Queen Elizabeth reign?)
Demand (v) – Exigir - to ask for something forcefully (Ex: He demands to see the manager. / I demand an explanation. / I demand to know what is going on here!)
Trust (v) = confiar (Ex: I don’t trust that man.) / Trust (n) = confiança/ Distrust (n) = Desconfiança
Whisper (v) – Sussurrar - To speak very quietly so that only the person next to you can hear you. (Ex: It’s rude to whisper! / “Where are the toilets?” she whispered. / I couldn’t hear what they were saying because they were whispering.)
Get Rid Of (sth/sb) – Livrar-se de algo ou alguém (Ex: You need to get rid of your old television. / I got rid of some old furniture by selling it to my nephew.) (furniture (n) = mobília)
While (conj) – Enquanto (Ex: While I was in Italy I went to see Alessandro. / I gained a lot of weight while I was on vacation.) (weight (n) = peso)
Push (sth) Off (v) – Empurrar pra fora (Ex: Our car broke down and we had to push it off the road.)
