The brand COCA-COLA BRAZIL has been active in Brazil since 1942. It is among the
biggest four company of Coca-Cola's Company. Coca-Cola Brazil can be found through the
country. As most companies, this brand is also concerned about the environment. I will
emphasize its sustainable bottels. This company was the first to develop ecological bottles
made by sugar cane. The goal of producing a new kind of bottle is to reduce foot-print. For
this purpose, it has a different way to produce its plastic bottles. The Coca-Cola uses natural
and renewable raw materials to produce beverage packaging, such as ethanol produced from
sugar cane instead of using just oil. The result of mixing sugar cane and oil is a plastic 100%
recyclable. Despite using different components of regular bottles, this eco bottle seems like the
conventional bottle. Nothing has changed, just the composition. The next challenge is to
produce bottles that are 100% recycled.
The plastic bottles made from sugar cane is called "PlantBottle" The PlantBottle is
composed 30% of sugar cane and molasses (a derivative of sugar cane) and 70% of regular
PET. To be more specific, 30% is monoethylene glycol and the others 70% is purified
terephtalic acid. The goal is to reduce oil consumption in 5 thousand, in consequence the
emission of CO
2
will be reduced in 100 %. The sugar cane used to produce the bottles is
cultivated by audited suppliers that use just water rain.
According to the Sustainability Report from Coca-Cola Brazil, in 2011 the company
hired 15,231 new employees and 16,335 were fired. In 2011, the minimum monthly salary in
Brazil was R$ 545.00 (U$ 250.00), while the minimum monthly salary for Coca-Cola's
employees was R$ 720.10 (U$ 330.32). It means that this company paid its employees 32.12%
more than national minimum salary. About 88% of the employees are men. On the other hand,
88% layoffs are men too. The company also employees people with special needs.
As I said before, Coca-Cola Brazil is concerned with the environment. For that reason,
this company developed the PlantBottle and other resources to help the environment, such as
collecting bottles to be recycled - collecting bottles also employees many people in Brazil. It
already recycles almost 57% of plastic bottles, but its goal is to recycle 100% by 2020. Coca-
