It’s twelve o’clock. The sun is bright and shining and it’s a very hot day at a big city in Africa. We see a typical African street. The street is not a common street like we see here, it’s a land street. There are tents selling fruits, animal, clothes, typical instruments and a variety of other products of all kinds. Despite all the people walking, there’s a few trucks charged with food and health supplies passing by. Almost everyone at the place is black and wears no shoes. The men are very strong and a lot of women are carrying babies around. At the end of the street, one of the most crowded in the city, at the door of a building there’s a sign made of wood that reads “Hostel”. A man, James, with his camera hanging around his neck and holding his baggage with both hands, crosses the street and enters the Hostel.
SCENE 1 – James finds a friend
JAMES: (very intimidated by the people around, walks up to the receptionist) Hello, my name is James, can you help me? (Noticing that the receptionist doesn’t understand what he is saying, he speaks slowly) I arrived today from U.S.A and I wanted a place to stay. (Checks his wallet and gets a bit anxious) I want to stay for a week, how much is it? (Waits anxiously for the answer) (She doesn’t answer)
(A guy who was sitting on a chair gets up and walks up to James, looking at him with friendly eyes)
GUY: (Speaks very calm) I’m sorry, I heard you saying you need a place to stay for a week, is that right?
JAMES: (Clearly afraid of the stranger, picks his bags up from the floor) Yeah, that’s right. (Cutting the conversation) But I’m okay, thank you very much.
GUY: (A bit uneasy with James’s attitude of picking up the bags) I….I’m sorry. (Reminds himself) Oh! That’s right, I forgot to introduce myself. (With satisfaction and pride) My name is Mamello, and I live here in this city. You can stay at my house!
JAMES: (Very interested) Really? Oh, what a nice thing, good to meet you! (Shake hands with Mamello). Tell me more!
MAMELLO: (Showing with his hands) (Satisfied and glad) I have a house very close to the most (emphasizes the word) beautiful beach of the country! You just have to walk, like, twenty minutes and you’re there! (Looks at James’ camera and picks it up, pretending to take a photo of James) And I know that you’re a photographer and there are great places to take photographs at my house. (Cheerful) You’ll love it!
JAMES: (Taking his camera out of Mamello’s hands) (With suspicion) And how much do I have to pay you for it?
MAMELLO: (Always smiling and very friendly) We will discuss that after we get there! (Picks up James’ baggage with one hand and hold one of James’ hands with the other, making James follow him walking out the Hostel)
JAMES: (Smiles and feels happy to make the deal) (Shouting) Well, your house, your orders! (Starts to walk with Mamello)
SCENE 2 – James’ Goodbye
It’s around 2 pm. And the sun is high and shining. We see a very beautiful beach, with gold-color sand and crystal clear water with the sun reflected in it. It’s a windy day, a great day to go swimming at the beach, but there are three or four more people there besides James and Mamello, who just got there. There are no shops or malls around, only the ocean, the sand and the huge mountain covered with green vegetation.
JAMES: (Unbuttoning his shirt and taking of his sandals) (Sad) Thank you, my dear friend, for bringing me here one last time so I can say goodbye to the beach.
MAMELLO: (Moaning with pain in the stomach) It’s a good thing you left your
