At the beginning of the 60s, Brazil was undergoing a major political unrest. After the resignation of Janio Quadros, took his deputy, João Goulart (known as Jango). He advocated the left of measures considered for the then policy of the country and planned to basic reforms aimed at reducing inequalities in the country.
To improve the economic crisis and political instability, Jango proposed constitutional reforms, such as controlling the money sent abroad, to channels of communication to students and allow the vote to the illiterate. These reforms accelerated the reaction of the elites, creating conditions for the 1964 coup.
But the big event for the Military coup happened was in March 1964 when Jango determined the agrarian reform and the nationalization of foreign oil refineries.

The elite did not miss and reacted: the press, the conservative clergy and the business community organized in São Paulo, the "March of the Family with God for freedom" which brought together about 500 thousand people. They renounced attempts to reform the Brazilian Constitution and the defense of the principles of Brazil's policy.
Then, on March 31 of that year, the military began the seizure of power and the deposition of Jango. On April 2, João Goulart came from Brasilia to Porto Alegre and Ranieri Mazilli took office. After a few days, Jango went into exile in Uruguay.
The AI-1 (Institutional Act No. 1) was issued on April 9, 1964 and was a military decree carried out to depose the president and initiate forfeiture of political mandates. In the same month, Marshal Castello Branco took office with a mandate until 24 January 1967, starting the military dictatorship in the country.
