It is a story about greed, power and madness, in which we follow the rise of general Macbeth to the throne of Scotland. The piece was probably written between 1603 and 1607, together or just before Hamlet.Além hundreds of assemblies, the play has also inspired an opera and many movies.
At the beginning of the plot, Macbeth is a loyal and brave general who returns from combat. Along the way, he encounters three witches, who make a prophecy of greatness: that soon it will be Thane of Cawdor, and then make himself king. Macbeth is accompanied by his friend Banquo, who asks the witch what fate holds for him; they respond that he will not be king, but it will be the father of a line of kings.
After the disappearance of witches, a messenger will find Macbeth and Banquo, to bring good news: Macbeth has been named Thane of Cawdor. The completion of the first part of the prophecy comes on the ambition of Macbeth, who writes a letter narrating what happened to his wife.
When King Duncan decides to spend a night in Macbeth's castle, his wife creates a plot to assassinate the king and usurp his throne. With seduction and trickery, she convinces her husband to put the plan into practice. He can put the blame on the murder of the servants of the king; king's sons flee in fear, and Macbeth assumes the throne.
Despite the success, Macbeth has no peace: he is tormented by both guilt for what he did (and the atrocities that happens to commit, as we shall see), and the constant fear of losing his throne. He remembers the prophecy that witches made about Banquo: that their children would start a new line of kings. Fearful, Macbeth order to Banquo and his son's death. But the son of Banquo manages to escape the killers, and runs away.
