The Digestive System Process
Not many people understands how complicated and at the same time marvelous is the process of how we absorb the necessary nutrients for our body. I will be explaining how our bodies digest, absorb, and excrete everything we eat. The digestive system consists of many organs working together to get these three jobs done. The main organs are mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, and anus. These organs are called the digestive track and all of them together are a continuing tube of some 30 feet long. The other organs like the salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas are accessory organs that help in the digestion, absorption and excretion of food.
Mouth
The mouth is a hollow space formed by hard and soft palates that form the roof of the mouth. The cheeks are the lateral walls that are joined with the lips and the tongue is connected to the floor of the mouth by the lingual frenulum. Then the space between the cheeks and the teeth is called the vestibule. In the mouth we have the teeth and the salivary glands. The teeth are stable in their place because of the gingivae. Then there are three pairs of salivary glands which are the parotid, sublingual, and submandibular and all of these are the ones responsible for secreting saliva. The tongue is made of skeletal muscle and is covered with a mucous membrane. It is divided in to three parts the root, the central body, and the pointed tip. Elevations and the taste buds are located in the surface of the tongue and we have four types of taste buds which are sweet, salt, sour, and bitter.
