Rowling’s Life
J.K. Rowling is one of richest women in United Kingdom and her net worth is about US$1 billion. She is a British author of Harry Potter and her wealth is coming from this books. However, we do know that most of the people who became rich will have their own stories. So does Rowling. Before she is rich, she does lead a very twisted life. (1990) the idea of Harry Potter was born when she was on a four-hour delayed train from Manchester to London. All the characters and stories in the books are developing in her head and she wrote it down immediately on the train.
However, in December of that year, an unfortunate incident happens on her while she is still writing the first Harry Potter book. Her mother died after ten-year battle with multiple sclerosis. Besides that, she does feel very regret of not telling her mom that she had write this book. And this is the first time in her life that she cries uncontrollably. After her mother’s death, she does write more details about Harry losses of his parents as she knew how it feels like.
"Initially I was elated, but then there came a point I cried and I have only ever cried once before in my life - and that was when my mother died. It was uncontrollable and I'm not a big crier," Rowling said. "I never told my mother about it, I would have done - I know she would have liked it. But I regret it hugely. The books wouldn't be what they are if she hadn't died. Her death is on virtually every other page of the Harry Potter books. If she hadn't died I don't think it's too strong to say there wouldn't be Harry Potter," an emotional Rowling said.
After that, she went to Portugal to teach English and married a Portuguese in 16 October 1992. On 23 July 1993, their child was born and named Jessical Isabel Rowling Arantes. But unfortunately, they separated in November 1993 and the following month she moved near to her sister in Edinburgh, Scotland with her daughter. (The reason for their divorce is because her husband is both physically and emotionally abusive.) But during this period, she diagnosed with clinical depression and contemplated suicide. However, it was this feeling of illness that brought her the idea of Dementors, soul sucking creature introduced in her third books. On the other hand, she feels that her life after graduating for seven years is a failure. Her marriage had failed, she was jobless with a dependent child. But after she overcomes the feeling, she describes her failure as liberating:
“Failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy to finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one area where I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realized, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter, and a big idea. And so rock bottom became a solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.” – J. K. Rowling, Harvard commencement address, 2008.
