Good afternoon, guys! Today I’ll talk about a little bit of Olinda. Olinda was founded by the captaincy doneer Duarte Coelho in 1535. Due to strategic location and the prosperity, Olinda became a Village in 1537. The success with sugar cane and the extraction of Pau-Brasil became Olinda the most important comercial center of the colony. The arrived of religious groups was important for catechism of Indians and conquer definitely of this areas. In 1532, the Dutch invade Olinda and take over the captaincy of Pernambuco. A year before, the dutch stolen the precious materials and set fire to Olinda, for construction of their new houses on Pernambuco. Olinda try to rebuild after to kick out the Dutch in 1654, but Pernambuco became more and more important than Olinda with the time. During the XIX century, ceases to be the capital, and in 1982 was declared historical and cultural heritage by UNESCO.
The typical food can be found all the state. Stand out stewed and roasted meet, as Carne de sol to seafood. The pernambucan cuisine is rich in snacks, as tapioca, butter cookies, etc. How about desserts we have the Bolo de Rolo (considered a imaterial heritage), the cake Souza Leão, etc
Exist a lot of styles of music in Pernambuco, the must famous are frevo, maracatu, caboclinho, Coco and forró. I’ll talk a little bit about frevo and maracatu.
Frevo is a mix of music and dance. And it has three types: Frevo de rua is a instrumental style, it’s play with brass instruments (trumpet, tuba,...). Frevo de bloco is play with string instruments (guitar, etc). Frevo canção is similar to others, but add voice in the music.
Maracatu has two types. Maracatu nação or baque virado is a mix of cultures, it’s play with ngue alfaios, gongue, ganzas. The song is form between a solo singer and usually a female chorus. Maracatu baque solto ou rural is play with gongue, ganzas, tarol. And it’s sung for a female singer
Regional accent present is a result of the colonization and the different cultures that came here. We can tell the Northeasterner speak “singing” and open vocalizing most vowels. A strong characteristic is the “chiado” when pronounce /s/ and /z/ in find syllabe and a variation in pronounce /d/ and /t/ before vowel. Also we have different words to say the same thing, for example, we say “preguiça” and they say “lezeira”. Another example: “arengar” means annoying someone.
Now, the folklore is Rich and very diverse. There are events and strong manifestation of culture, as mamulengo (a puppet theater); caboclinho (represent the indigenous ceremony); Maracatu (represent the coronation of the king of the Congo); Bumba meu boi (imerged aming the slaves and the poorest people); Frevo (typical and contagious dance) and we can’t forgot the traditional parade of the giants puppets of Olinda. Also, we have many popular storied and legends among population. In Olinda, for example, there the legend of Pope Fig, the midnight man and stories of haunted places like A Cruz do patrão.
