Experimental evidence on the design skills and professional behaviour valued by design practitioners and managers is presented and reviewed in the context of an operational model of the design process. Implications for design education and research are discussed. In the light of this discussion a procedure advocated by many educational researchers for assessing the quality of university education is critically examined, and found not to meet the needs of professional disciplines.
A evidência experimental sobre as habilidades de design e comportamento profissional valorizados pelos praticantes de projeto e gerentes é apresentada e analisada no contexto de um modelo operacional do processo de design. Implicações para a educação de design e pesquisa são discutidos. À luz dessa discussão um procedimento defendida por muitos pesquisadores em educação para avaliar a qualidade do ensino universitário é analisada criticamente, não acharam para atender às necessidades das disciplinas profissionais.
This paper is about learning in design and how can we measure this learning. The work reported here is based on a study of the actual practice of procurement, design and construction of a number of clients who repeatedly commission work of a similar nature. The paper sets out the background of a project entitled LEAF (Learning from Experience—Applying Feedback) which developed a generic model to assist organisations in understanding their situation. The discussion develops the LEAF evaluation model and explains its use describing all its parameters.
