- Historical origin:
Barbados is an island country situated at the eastern end of the Antilles, a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. It was a colony of England for more than three centuries and still has the influence of British culture.
The name Barbados was given by the Portuguese and means "bearded". In reference to the long roots of fig trees that are found in abundance throughout the island. Some historians believe that the first civilization to exist in the region was the Amerindians, that later moved to the island of Venezuela. Some evidence may suggest that the Island was inhabited from an early age 1600 b.c. - one thousand six hundred years before Christ. There was also a period of indigenous housing in Barbados during the 4th century b.c.
In 1563 (one thousand five hundred and sixty-three) the Portuguese arrived on the island. Meanwhile, according to all indications, there were already inhabitants in Barbados during this period, it was the Arauak, peaceful indians that were expelled later by the Caribbean Indians. The Portuguese used the island as a supply center in the Caribbean, on their way to Brazil.
In 1626 (one thousand six hundred and twenty-six) the English arrived in Barbados, among them Captain John Powell, that found it uninhabited, immediately claiming it for King James I of England. The English took over the Island very quickly and implemented their customs in such a way that they started calling it "Little England".
- Social, political and economic organization.
The social, political and economic organization of Barbados began when it was still a colony of England, which installed Parliament in the English model on the Island. This was the third oldest in the British community, after the British House of Commons and the Bermuda House of Assemblies. But it was after the emancipation of slaves that Barbados began a time of renewal and formation of an independent society. After 1951 (one thousand and nine hundred and fifty- one) and with the proposal in motion for a bi-partisan system of government, the Island was well prepared for independence, which it later conquered in 1966 (one thousand nine hundred and sixty-six). With Errol Barrow, of the Democratic Labour Party and protagonist of the movements for the independence of the country, assuming the leadership of the government as Prime Minister.
- Transition of Barbados from a Parliamentary Monarchy to Parliamentary Republic:
After 55 (fifty-five) years of Parliamentary Monarchy, In October 2021(two thousand and twenty-one), Sandra Mason was elected by Parliament to become the first President of Barbados. And on 30.11.2021 (thirtieth of November two thousand and twenty-one) Maison replaced Queen Elizabeth II (second) as head of state, with the transition of Barbados from a Parliamentary Monarchy to a Parliamentary Republic. The head of government is the prime minister, a position held since 2018 (two thousand and eighteen) by Mia Mottley.
Barbados has an economy based on tourism, and the export of sugar and its derivatives (rum). With the exception of sugarcane, the products grown are specifically for local consumption.
The country offers a high social standard to its population. It has the highest Human Development Index in Latin America and the Caribbean. Most of the inhabitants live in the western part, facing the Caribbean Sea, with lush white sand beaches and clear waters. Due to its natural beauty, Barbados attracts millions of tourists throughout the year. Subject covered in the next topic.
- Cultural activities (culture, beaches, folk festivities – music, dance and gastronomy).
- Culture and architecture
The influence of British culture on Barbados is more visible than on other islands in the West Indies. A good example of this is the island's national sport: cricket. Barbados has several great cricketers, including Garfield Sobers and Frank Worrell.
Barbados is filled with more impressive historic architectural buildings than anywhere else in the Caribbean. In years past, buildings were constructed with coral rather than wood, a popular natural resource on the islands. Take a look around Barbados and you'll stumble across the historic architectural styles that grace the imposing and unique grand houses, some of which date back to the early 17th (seventeenth) century. Farmhouses like this showcase colonial Caribbean architecture, dating back to British influence from the Georgian and Jacobean eras.
Another English influence is in the direction. Barbadians also use their right hand to drive motor vehicles.
- Beaches
In addition to guaranteeing sunny days all year round, with a privileged location, Barbados is the westernmost island in the Caribbean and, like Aruba, Curaçao and Los Roques, is outside the hurricane path, has paradisiacal landscapes and attractions for all tastes.
Barbados offers different beach experiences to its visitors, each with its own characteristics. I would say the island offers the kind of beach you want. Whether to surf big waves, be it for excitement and partying, be it a calm, transparent and calm sea or for diving. Anyway, if you like the beach, Barbados is the place that offers the best and most diverse options in this regard.
