Q.1.1

Q.1.1.1

A: After Damian’s research, he found out that there are five process types:

  • Project process – This type of process is unique and individual due to mostly being on large scales like building houses, bridges.
  • Jobbing process – This type is usually on a small scale and unique, since the requirements can always differ.
  • Batch process (job lots) – This is a limited production where products are manufactured in lots but they don’t have the same variety.
  • Mass process – Is the production in big scale but with very low variety.
  • Continuous process – Is the production in big scale with low variety and nonstop.

Q.1.1.2

A: The most suitable in my opinion is the continuous process, since they got a contract for selling 100 boards a month, they just need a continuous production of 100 boards a month and its settled.

Q.1.2

Q.1.2.1

A:

  1. The fixed-position layout – The product can’t change size, location or shape;
  2. The process layout (flexible-flow layout) – Products that are similar are grouped together in sections;
  3. The product layout (line-flow layout) – The different operations are arranged in consecutive order;
  4. The cellular layout (hybrid layout) – Specific operations are placed in a cell, then arranged according to the operation.

Q.1.2.2

A: In my opinion, the most suitable layout would be The fixed-position layout, because since they have a contract, they have to deliver what was agreed, with no changes in shape or size.

  • Sundry recruiting strategies – This is when a Business visits schools and universities looking for long-term employees.

Q.1.5.2

A: The most suitable method would be E-recruiting, since they know exactly what they are looking for (people to cut and shape boards, sanding and varnishing the boards), they can just create a Web site and place the description of what they are looking for. And it’s the cheapest option.

In this learning unit we defined the role of business in society as the world in a market economy that involves the transformation of resources into products or services in order to meet peoples needs.
