The Violence
Having a hard time with the violence of the city of Rio de Janeiro? Well, you’re not the only one. The violence in the city has increased noticeably over the years. And there seem no tendencies for changing. Just yesterday, when a friend of mine was robbed, I suddenly realized that only the police are not able to solve the problem. The causes of such violence in the city and in the country are very old.
Our country has always had a history of violence and social discrimination. People with fewer resources had very few opportunities for decent jobs and in those poor neighborhoods, where the State did not interfere, parallel powers settled creating the idea that violence was normal. At this point, the poor young people were seduced by the idea of easy money and a cycle of violence settled in the city and in the country.
According to several studies, only the police will not solve the problem. It is necessary that there are social projects, mainly on the quality of education, in public schools is usually low due to overcrowded classrooms and low salaries to teachers. Education is the only way the problem be resolved, along with the presence of a police force that is a friend of the community, not repressive.
And the moral of the story? The whole society is responsible for the violence. We ignore the clear differences between rich and poor and vote in terrible rulers and not supervise them. The real solution is only given to include these people in society, providing education and example to them.
