Aula 1 – O período colonial na Nova Inglaterra

O que é literatura inglesa?

• Falar do surgimento da literatura nos EUA. Índios (literatura oral – mitos, lendas, contos e letras – exaltação e respeito à natureza). Era comum ver plantas ou animais como personagens principais.
• Joseph Conrad – polonês

Demetrios Kapetanakis – grego

Ernest Hemingway – americano

Lin Yutang – chinês

Rabindranath Tagore – indiano

• O enfoque que daremos no curso

O que é a Bíblia?

• Ressaltar sua influência sobre a escrita, a fala e o pensamento inglês (é preciso enxergar a bíblia não apenas como a palavra de Deus, mas reconhecer a sua qualidade escrita, ou seja, encara-la como uma obra de grandes escritores).
• John Wyclif foi o primeiro a realizar a tradução da bíblia, por volta de 1380. Ele era um sacerdote que identificou muitos absurdos cometidos pela igreja e quis reformá-la.
• Em 1408 as autoridades decretaram que qualquer tentativa de traduzir a Bíblia, sem permissão de um bispo, devia ser punida com a excomunhão.

   O período colonial na Nova Inglaterra

* Nova Inglaterra → região nordeste dos EUA

* Entre 1630-1690 havia tantos homens com formação universitária na Nova Inglaterra quanto na pátria mãe. (Eles necessitavam de cultura e educação para entender e executar a vontade de Deus enquanto estabeleciam as novas colônias na Nova Inglaterra).

* Estilo puritano – diverso (complexa poesia metafísica, diários caseiros e histórias religiosas)

* Alguns autores desse período:

1. William Bradford (1590-1657) – 1º historiador de sua colônia (Plymouth plantation é um relato claro e obrigatório do início da colônia)
2. Anne Bradstreet (1612- 1672) – 1º livro de poemas publicado por uma mulher foi o dela. Ela se inspirava na poesia metafísica inglesa
3. Edward Taylor (1644-1729) – Poeta. Nunca publicou nenhuma poesia, elas foram descobertas na década de 1930.
4. Michael Wigglesworth (1631-1705) – Utilizou temas puritanos em seu melhor trabalho The day of doom (dia do juízo final)
5. Samuel Sewall (1652-1730) – Diary (relato dos anos de 1674-1729)
6. Mary Rowlandson (1635-1678) – Prosadora. A literatura feminina trouxe o benefício do realismo doméstico e sabedoria do senso comum.
7. Cotton Mather (1633-1728)
8. Roger Willians (1603-1683)
9. John Woolman (1720-1772)
10. Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758)

Literatura nas colônias do sul e na região central

* Os primeiros imigrantes ingleses foram atraídos para as colônias do sul devido às oportunidades econômicas e não em busca de liberdade religiosa.

* A literatura sulista para a classe mais abastada era influenciada pelo Velho Mundo, o ideal de uma classe nobre de fazendeiros que se estabeleceu graças à escravidão.

* A literatura do sul se caracteriza por ser mais leve, informativa, realista e conectada com o resto do mundo.

     1. William Byrd (1674-1744) – resume o espírito dos proprietários sulistas de terras do período colonial. Sua biblioteca de mais de 3600 livros era a maior do sul. Os escritos deles em geral era sobre: terra, os índios, as plantações, os animais e os colonizadores. Ele ficou mais conhecido por suas composições para a Igreja.

     2. Robert Beverley (1673-1722) – admirava os índios e comentava as estranhas superstições europeias sobre a Virginia (a crença de que o lugar transformava em negros todos que iam lá).

Surgimento da literatura afro-americana

1. Olaudah Equiano (1745-1797) – Nascido na Nigéria, foi o 1º negro a escrever uma autobiografia: The interesting narrative of the life of Olaudah Equiano. No livro, ele faz um relato de sua terra nativa e os horrores e crueldades de seu aprisionamento e escravização nas índias Ocidentais.
2. Jupiter Hammon (1720-1800) – Escravo de Long Island, é lembrado por seus poemas religiosos e luta. An evening thought – 1º poema publicado por um negro na América.

Salvation comes from Christ on high,

We cry as Sinners to the Lord,
Salvation to obtain;
It is firmly fixt his holy Word,
Ye shall not cry in vain.

O let our Prayers ascend on high;
We felt thy Salvation.
