Introduction.
The XXX has to use the 3D printer technology to make a die using polymer and a polymer-composite. In order of that our group chose the fused deposition modelling (FDM) 3D printer, the polymer is the acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and the polymer composite material the carbon fiber was chosen.
The principles that we used to choose the printer and the materials were: the amount of material that would be required to produce the die; the amount of energy, products, process or machinery that uses an exaggerated quantity of energy were exclude; minimize the weight, the heat and electrical loss were characteristics considered; the environment was one of the most considerable key points, the current green wash in companies all over the world was a big deal for this process.
Therefore, considering all the terms presented in the last paragraph, some points weren’t 100% fulfilled. We are using product that are not biodegradable, but they can be recycled or the feedstock product isn’t the lighter product of the market, but it has other advantages.
To resume this introduction, the three products that we choose are a very good combination of quality, save the environment and save money cost. In the end of this paper the reader will be able to find the results of those three items and analyze by itself.
3D Printer
The fused deposition modelling (FDM) 3D printer is used to build models, prototypes, product application and parts is standard high performance thermoplastics. This printer is the only one that uses production-grade thermoplastics, in result parte are unrivaled in mechanical, thermal and chemical strength.
We can split the process in three parts: pre-processing, production and post processing. In the first process the team has to do a build preparation in a software and position a 3D CAD to calculate the path that the machinery will do and the material necessary to support the product. In this part of the process that the “product designer” will define which materials will be necessary to build the product, colors etc. This part of the process has human dependency, one mistake here and the product will be defective. After this the data produced in the software is transfer to the FDM printer, the printer heats the thermoplastic to a liquid state, the machine pulls this liquid and starts to do the product lair by lair in horizontal direction, bottom to the top. After the piece is ready, it is taken off the machine the support goes off and the product has a washing process, so the material can have the quality improved. The direction is not only horizontal, it can be moved in X-Y-Z directions.
