Rock in Rio

Rock in Rio is now the most important Brazilian festival in the world and one of the most significant on the planet. Over nearly 30 years, it became the owner of a prominent story in the music scene, with 12 editions performed, and more than 6 million people gathered and one of the strongest presence in digital media.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, it not only conquered Brazil, but also Portugal and Spain, always with the intention of bringing all styles of music for a variety of audiences.

Much more than a musical event, it became complete and comprehensive in addressing issues such as sustainability and environmental responsibility. It also undertook the commitment to make people aware that, with small actions in everyday life, they can make the world a better place.

- 1985

It was 1985 and Brazil was undergoing major changes. After a long period under a military dictatorship, the country began to take the first steps towards democracy. In this scenario, it was the first time a South American country, which lived similar times, would host a musical event of this type.

And it was not born small. Conceived by the entrepreneur Roberto Medina, the first Rock in Rio took place in the Rio de Janeiro, the city that baptizes it, in the neighborhood of Jacarepaguá. Along with the dream comes the City of Rock, an area of 250 thousand square meters built especially for the festival, which would be donated to the municipality as a multi functional area for events.

It brought together names such as AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Queen and the Brazilians Gilberto Gil, Paralamas do Sucesso and Barão Vermelho.

Altogether 28 bands – national and international – led the pages of history to a new reality: Brazil has a great festival.

- 1991

The world's largest stadium was the place chosen for the second edition of Rock in Rio It took the field a mass of 700,000 people eager for big names in music, but also a true selection of artists who had this crowd jumping up in the festival over 9 days.

The Maracanã stage received famous folks such as Faith No More, Guns N’ Roses, Megadeth, INXS, Run DMC, Joe Cocker and Carlos Santana, as well as Brazilian artists such as Sepultura, Engenheiros do Hawaii and Titãs.

As we can see on special edition of Bizz Magazine about Rock in Rio, again, the success of the festival left its mark on the city, in the history of music and on the Guinness Book of Records with the Norwegians A-HA, which played to 198,000 people, a record attendance of a paying audience into a single musical event so far .

- 2001

Almost 10 years after its last edition, Rock in Rio formalized its return to the same place it had received its first edition. A new City of Rock was erected in Jacarepaguá, with a daily capacity of 250 thousand people.

This edition brought a number of new features. Under the premise For a Better World, the music began to share space with discussions on environmental issues, education and citizenship. Before the start of the shows, a symbolic act joined a large number of radio and TV stations for over 3 minutes of silence, to chant for a single request for peace. Aiming to attract new audiences, new stages were created as diverse musical styles can be performed.

The festival also beat its own attendance record and number of bands. The line-up marked the return of headliners from two past editions, such as Iron Maiden and Guns N'Roses, and even brought Foo Fighters, REM, Neil Young, Queens of The Stone Age, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis and many other important names.

It was the beginning of a new stage in the life of the festival.

-2004, 2006, 2008

04 - The Portuguese edition follows the path tracked by Rock in Rio 2001, which employs its strength as an entertainment festival around social responsibility and actions that seek for a better world.

This force has won the support of line-up names such as Metallica, Paul McCartney and Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon and Incubus, as well as Brazilian and Portuguese artists. About 60 countries watched the broadcasted shows.

06 - The Rock in Rio definitively establishes itself in Lisbon, and officially will now take place every 2 years.

In its fifth edition, the festival returned to the park that hosted the previous version, with a line-up that walks through many styles and generations.

There were famous names such as Guns N’ Roses, Jamiroquai, Kasabian, Roger Waters, Santana, Shakira, Sting, as well as artists having a strong identity with electronic music such as David Guetta, Groove Armada and Carl Cox. Jota Quest, Marcelo D2, Pitty and Ivete Sangalo represented
