PREPARE A DIAGNOSTIC TEST FOR A CLASS OF STUDENTS YOU ARE ABOUT TO TAKE OVER.
There are different types of tests in English: current or mid-tests (conducted throughout the course), thematic tests (offered to students after the topic, unit or section), final tests (aimed at the overall test of the course), as well as diagnostic tests to determine the level of knowledge. Diagnostic tests are made according to the syllabus you are going to teach your pupils. They help a teacher identify gaps in grammar, vocabulary, or reading, for example. Analyzing pupils’ mistakes, a teacher can put some corrections and add some units into the course, which will focus on current grammatical errors, extension of vocabulary words.
One year ago I conducted Business English Course in one IT company. To start or continue learning any foreign language in adulthood is a laudable decision. The motives that encourage students to learn a foreign language can be very different. But in any case, in order to achieve the desired result, it is necessary to plan the program and the main stages of training properly. For this purpose the teacher needs to know about the existing subject knowledge of the future student or their absence.
I have prepared a test to a group of adults with pre-intermediate and intermediate levels who are going to take up Business English Course. The test consists of two parts: the first one has multiple choice tasks and will check vocabulary knowledge of the students (and it will take 10-15 min to finish this part, depending on their level), the second one has some written tasks and will check spelling and lexical skills of students (will take 10-15 min, depending on their level) and I also added the third part where students can evaluate their speaking and writing levels. So with the help of the results of this diagnostic test I can correct my syllabus before taking over these students for this course.
