Review – The Audio-Lingual Method.

The audio-lingual method is characterized by teaching vocabulary through

repetition, because this method is perfect and emphasized the closest aspect of the

pronunciation of a native speaker.

The experience presented in the text relates an English class in Mali, with thirty-

four students. The teacher develops the lesson by playing the audio of the dialogue, then

she works with the repetition of dialogues and photo exhibition to contribute in class

The teacher emphasizes the repetition with the intention of memorizing

vocabulary, because it follows the concepts of acquisition of the audio-lingual method

The audio-lingual method seems to be efficient in theory, because students are

exposed to the pronunciation and vocabulary of the target language and that is working

to repeat this vocabulary, but that does not cover all aspects of learning a foreign

Anyway, in my opinion the audio-lingual method is not very effective in

language learning, because it works with the appreciation of the vocabulary of the target

language and speech and devalues the cultural aspects of the native language.

Within the perspective of this method, one can also include the perfection of

pronunciation and the rejection of errors that students make and especially the fact that

the method proposed memorization of the word but not its meaning.

The direct method prioritizes target language working with orality and has use in

the current educational context.

This method does not work with translation and not with the explanation of the

meanings in the native language because it works with the use of the target language in

the classroom.

Another important aspect is to be reflected on the use mimics and statements for

explanation that requires the teacher an ease during lessons.

Within this method has the value communication in the target language because

the conversation is very important for the student to associate words with meanings

where questions and answers are used.

Finally the direct method can have its advantages and qualities but disregards the

native language
