Review – The Audio-Lingual Method.
The audio-lingual method is characterized by teaching vocabulary through
repetition, because this method is perfect and emphasized the closest aspect of the
pronunciation of a native speaker.
The experience presented in the text relates an English class in Mali, with thirty-
four students. The teacher develops the lesson by playing the audio of the dialogue, then
she works with the repetition of dialogues and photo exhibition to contribute in class
The teacher emphasizes the repetition with the intention of memorizing
vocabulary, because it follows the concepts of acquisition of the audio-lingual method
The audio-lingual method seems to be efficient in theory, because students are
exposed to the pronunciation and vocabulary of the target language and that is working
to repeat this vocabulary, but that does not cover all aspects of learning a foreign
Anyway, in my opinion the audio-lingual method is not very effective in
language learning, because it works with the appreciation of the vocabulary of the target
language and speech and devalues the cultural aspects of the native language.
Within the perspective of this method, one can also include the perfection of
pronunciation and the rejection of errors that students make and especially the fact that
the method proposed memorization of the word but not its meaning.
The direct method prioritizes target language working with orality and has use in
the current educational context.
This method does not work with translation and not with the explanation of the
meanings in the native language because it works with the use of the target language in
the classroom.
Another important aspect is to be reflected on the use mimics and statements for
explanation that requires the teacher an ease during lessons.
Within this method has the value communication in the target language because
the conversation is very important for the student to associate words with meanings
where questions and answers are used.
Finally the direct method can have its advantages and qualities but disregards the
native language
