RESUMO

        

        O principal objetivo deste estudo foi analisar as características da literatura gótica presentes na obra o Morro dos Ventos Uivantes, de Emily Brontë, levando em consideração o contexto histórico e a sociedade britânica no final do século XVIII e início do século XIX. A metodologia consistiu em uma revisão bibliográfica do período histórico/social da Inglaterra no século XVIII. Quatro aulas foram também ministradas em uma turma do Ensino Médio de uma escola pública, com o objetivo de apresentar a literatura gótica O estudo concluiu que a obra Morro dos Ventos Uivantes pode ser considerada como uma das principais representantes da literatura gótica devido ao fato de que apresenta várias características do romantismo e da literatura gótica, como presença de fantasmas, cenário medieval, morte e loucura.

ABSTRACT

        The main objective of this study was to analyze the Gothic elements in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, considering the social and historical context and the British society from the end of the Eighteenth century and the beginning of the Nineteenth century. The methodology consisted of a bibliographical review of the social-historic period of England in the 19th-century. Four classes were also given to students from high school, with the objective of presenting the Gothic literature. The study concluded that Wuthering Heights work might be considered as one of the main representatives of Gothic literature, due the fact it presents several characteristics of romanticism and Gothic novels, such as ghost, medieval setting, death and madness.

INTRODUCTION

The popular novels from the eighteenth-century had some ideas associated with the Romantic, like the cult of the feelings, which is known as ‘sensibility’. This sensibility has an honorable history because it appears from a reaction against the sheer brutality of eighteenth-century life, and it drew on philosophical beliefs in the innate goodness of man. However, in this period, the characters’ lives increased by emotion and the sensibility expressed in human relations and in response to nature and art. In the 1790s, sensibility became a fashionable attribute, but this did not change the world to a better place, as novelists were heroes of the danger of sensibility.
